چکیده

A colony is meant to be a symbol manipulating system consisting of as simple as possible components which behave in a cooperative way such that the collective competence is stricty larger than the component competences. We introduce here colonies whose agents can only perform point mutation (hence the abbreviation PM) transformations of the common string (which represents the environment of the colony), in a vicinity of the agent. In this way, important notions of this area, such as localization of agents, paral-lelism, lack of internal representation, agent interaction, come into stage in a very natural way. In contrast with the simplicity of the involved agents, the behavior of PM-colonies is quite intricate: many problems concerning the \life" of a colony are not algorithmically solvable, the number of agents in the colony or simultaneously present in the environment deene innnite hierarchies of languages, etc. Such results show that the behavior of the PM-colonies is not predictable and that their behavior is signiicantly syn-ergetic.

Structural Properties of Colonies with t mod Derivation

To study structural properties of PM-Colonies the classes of languages: Reachable, Unreachable, Alive, Dead, etc. were introduced. In this paper we study these classes of languages in colonies with t mod derivation. We show possible combinations of these classes of languages in t mod colony and other interesting structural properties of t mod colonies.

Rapid in situ assay for indoleacetic Acid production by bacteria immobilized on a nitrocellulose membrane.

We have developed a new assay that differentiates between indoleacetic acid (IAA)-producing and -nonproducing bacteria on a colony plate lift. Medium supplemented with 5 mM L-tryptophan is inoculated with isolates of interest, overlaid with a nitrocellulose membrane, and then incubated until bacterial colonies reach 1 to 2 mm in diameter. The membrane is removed to a filter paper saturated with...

Biosynthetic ( Recombinant ) Human Granulocyte - Macrophage Colony - Stimulating Factor : Effect on Normal Bone Marrow and Leukemia Cell

To examine the biologic properties of the molecule encoded by the human gene for granulocyte-macrophage colony-stimulating factor (GM-CSF), we expressed the cloned complementary DNA (cDNA) in transfected monkey COS cells and purified the resultant protein. Purified biosynthetic human GM-CSF was added to cultures of normal hematopoietic progenitor cells in semisolid media, and the resulting colo...

Growth of Rat Mammary Adenocarcinoma Cells in Semisolid Clonogenic Medium Not Correlated with Spontaneous Metastatic Behavior: Heterogeneity in the Metastatic, Antigenic, Enzymatic, and Drug Sensitivity Properties of Cells from Different Sized Colonies1

Using rat 13762NF mammary tumor cell clones of varying spontaneous metastatic potentials and biochemical properties and known phenotypic stabilities we studied the relationship between cell colony growth in a clonogenic assay and the biological and biochemical properties of cells derived from different cell colonies. The spontaneous metastatic potential of in vivo or In vitro grown 13762NF tumo...
